## Core Position
The "synagogue of Satan" in Revelation 2:9 and 3:9 refers to those who use religious authority and identity to persecute and war against the church and the gospel of Jesus Christ — not to Jewish people as an ethnic group, not to modern Judaism broadly, and not a basis for any form of anti-semitism. Weaponizing this passage against Jewish people is a corruption of what Jesus actually said.
The Two Extremes — Both Rejected
Extreme 1 — Anti-Semitic weaponization: using Revelation 2:9 and 3:9 to justify violence against the Jewish community or to claim that all Jews are the synagogue of Satan. This is anti-semitism. Scripture is being weaponized to incite violence. This is explicitly rejected.
Extreme 2 — Gentile legalism: Gentiles joining Messianic Jewish churches believing their faith in Christ changed their DNA and made them Hebrew, then adopting legalistic Jewish practice. This is also rejected. The wall of hostility has been broken down — Ephesians 2:14. We are one new man.
What the Text Actually Says
Revelation 2:9 — "I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan."
Revelation 3:9 — "Those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie."
Jesus himself said this — it is not anti-semitic for a Gentile to quote it. Jesus was a Jew confronting those who claimed Jewish spiritual identity while persecuting his church.
At the time of writing, these were Jews who used their religious office and authority to violently persecute the early Christian church. Those who war against the gospel of Jesus Christ and persecute the church are the synagogue of Satan. This category exists today — those who torture and kill believers worldwide are operating in the same spirit.
The Extended Application
John 14:6-7 — "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also."
Knowledge of the Father leads to recognition of the Son. The inverse: rejection of the Son reveals that the Father was never truly known, regardless of religious practice.
John 5:46-47 — "If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"
Those who reject Christ while claiming to follow Moses do not actually believe Moses — because Moses wrote of Christ.
The True Jew of Spirit
When Pastor Charlie says "the only true Jew is a Christian" — this refers to the true Jew of Spirit, not of nationality.
- A Jewish person by nationality is still a Jew — physically, culturally, historically. God's irrevocable promises (Romans 11:29) still fall on their heads.
- The "true Jew" of Spirit is one who knows the Father and therefore recognizes Jesus as Messiah — because you cannot truly know the Father without coming to know the Son (John 14:7).
- Christianity is not exclusive — a Jewish person who accepts Jesus as Messiah is fully and completely both Jew and Christian simultaneously. That is a Messianic Jew.
- Messianic Jews and Gentile believers come together as one new man, one Body, one Church — Ephesians 2:14-16.
Romans 2:28-29 — "A Jew is not one outwardly... but a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit."
Not Replacement Theology — A Temporary Shifting
This is not replacement theology. The promises of God to Abraham are irrevocable (Romans 11:29). Physical Israel is beloved for the sake of the fathers (Romans 11:28). A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles — then all Israel will be saved (Romans 11:25-26).
What has occurred is a temporary shifting of spiritual authority and stewardship — not a permanent replacement. The kingdom was given to those who would produce fruit (Matthew 21:43) — and the Gentile church produced and reproduced with the gospel. But the promises on the Jewish people remain.
Good Jews — The Nicodemus Principle
There are Jewish people who genuinely love God. They are like Nicodemus — close, often moved, often with tears near the surface. People who truly love God will ultimately come to recognize Jesus as Messiah — because you cannot fully know the Father without coming to know the Son (John 14:7). The pastoral posture is love, compassion, and the honest proclamation that Jesus is the Messiah they have been waiting for.
What This Rejects
All Jews are the synagogue of Satan — Romans 11:28-29; Genesis 12:3.
Anti-semitic violence from this text — the text is Jesus speaking — not a license for Gentile violence against Jewish people.
The synagogue of Satan has ceased to exist — the worldwide persecution of the church today is the same spirit in operation.
Gentile DNA changes at conversion — Ephesians 2:14-16 — one new man; neither elevated nor replaced.
Replacement theology — Romans 11:25-29 — the promises are irrevocable; the hardening is partial and temporary.
